A young Syrian refugee mourns the loss of his his homeland and culture. Tired, worn-out and in despair, he clings to the remnants of a disheveled flag, representing over five thousand years of history. The cold darkness surrounding him reflects the feeling of isolation many refugees face when displaced from their home and arrive in an unfamiliar place that has an extremely limited understanding of their culture. The red of the flag, reflected in the pool of water like blood represents the hundreds of thousands who have needlessly lost their lives since the Syrian civil war broke out in March of 2011. The flags fallen star represents the fall of a civilisation. Despite all he has faced, the stoic figure radiates a strength and beauty showing that despite all he and his people have faced, he will endure, rise above his circumstances and live with the hope his beautiful homeland will one day be restored to its former glory. The painting comes framed in a stunning burnt wood effect frame.
