My inspiration for this painting was found in the desire to paint a rustic loaf of bread. Growing up in an Italian family, nearly every Saturday was spent watching our grandmother bake bread and hoping to sneak a taste of the raw dough when our mums weren’t watching. In this piece the arrangement is pressed as close to the picture plane as possible, the grapes which are typically the star are given a supporting role and are somewhat subdued. Two lemons accompany the bread in the foreground and sit atop a silver dish, the precariously placed ceramic jug adds some movement and life to the composition, as though it may spill forward at any moment and send one of the lemons tumbling to the ground. The star of painting however is the bread, its soft fluffy core contrasted with the warm and crunchy crust is a happy reminder of days spent growing up with family.
