~Tuscany~ 24x36 inches, Oil on Canvas.
This moderately sized piece depicts the medieval village of Palaia in the Pisa province of Tuscany. The town itself is exceptionally isolated, and uniquely positioned to enjoy all of Italy's exquisite geography. The town sits atop one of the many rolling rustic hills, with a smattering of tall ancient Tuscan cypress trees overlooking the town, which itself is embedded among pine and olive groves.
The composition captures the encroaching twilight, as the last rays of sun strike terracotta roofs and sandstone walls. Painted with rapid, impasto brush-strokes, the style captures the cacophony of clashing tones and textures. The dissonance of the structures in the town contrasts with the muted tones of the foreground - trees welcoming the cool encroaching night - and the diminishing intensity of the glowing sky.
