Artwork Description

The object of this painting was to express the monumental feel of a view I experienced whilst onboard a ship departing Melbourne. It was the first day of a family holiday. The boat we were on was heading out of Port Philip Bay, I took a photo of the skyline with a strip of the Bellarine Peninsula visible in the background. The scene was breath taking in scale. The clouds marched across the bay like shape shifting edifices, I imagined them as an army of light or a wall of angels. I wanted to capture the exhilaration in this painting by using the light and movement in the clouds contrasting with the relatively still jade green and black colours of the seawater below. I spent a lot of time painting many layers on the clouds. To build complex light effects and create a feeling of depth.

We've hung this painting in our lounge room for a few weeks. My wife noticed it's hues change at different times of daylight. We have enjoyed its presence. But I also aspire to find it a home where someone else will enjoy it's energy and light too.

Artist Bio

Thank you for taking the time to look at my profile. My paintings celebrate vibrant lighting conditions and natural landscapes. They intend to invoke an atmosphere of inspiration.
I use professional-grade acrylic paint to ensure colours remain bright for years. My work is presented on durable, high-quality timber panels or canvas. The paintings come fitted with hanging wire, ready to adorn the wall.
Growing up in Tasmania instilled in me a deep appreciation of wilderness. I studied in Hobart and obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Tasmania, majoring in printmaking. After living in Scotland for some time, I returned to Australia and am based in Melbourne. I explore drawing, digital art and experimental printing. But my main medium has evolved into painting. I'm inspired by seascapes, clouds, and elemental forces combined with the all-pervasive sunlight.
In the future, I'd love to incorporate music into my work.
