The object of this painting was to express the monumental feel of a view I experienced whilst onboard a ship departing Melbourne. It was the first day of a family holiday. The boat we were on was heading out of Port Philip Bay, I took a photo of the skyline with a strip of the Bellarine Peninsula visible in the background. The scene was breath taking in scale. The clouds marched across the bay like shape shifting edifices, I imagined them as an army of light or a wall of angels. I wanted to capture the exhilaration in this painting by using the light and movement in the clouds contrasting with the relatively still jade green and black colours of the seawater below. I spent a lot of time painting many layers on the clouds. To build complex light effects and create a feeling of depth.
We've hung this painting in our lounge room for a few weeks. My wife noticed it's hues change at different times of daylight. We have enjoyed its presence. But I also aspire to find it a home where someone else will enjoy it's energy and light too.
