Michael Jones, was born in Macclesfield, Cheshire, England in 1956 and came to Australia with his parents and his sister, Carole, in 1968.
Michael has painted and drawn since an early age and has steadily strived to learn more.
As Picasso said, 'You don't become an artist, you are one!'
Having lived in the western suburbs of Sydney for many years, he moved to Broken Hill, NSW, in 1989
with the NSW Police Force. There, he became friends with Pro Hart, they found that they had some things in common, they both painted and
had a love of motorcycles,(Michael was a motorcycle officer for over 5 years) Pro was Michael's landlord and used to sell his paintings
in the Anthill Gallery in Broken Hill. Whilst living in that outback city, Michael became friends with quite a few of the outback artists,
Howard Steer, Shane Gehlert, Kym Hart, Peter Browne and Michael's mentor, Clark Barrett.
By visiting all these different artists and absorbing all the advice and instruction, Michael's paintings have developed and are continuing to develop, his confidence with colour and shape have come ahead in leaps and bounds since his first encounter with Broken Hill. Over the years, Michael has moved to different locations around Australia, In 1998, after an accident during a high speed pursuit, Michael was pensioned off from the Police.
In 1999, Michael moved back to Broken Hill, living in an old miners cottage in Morgan Street, re-ignited old friendships and continued to paint the colours of the outback which he loves so much. In 2001, he got itchy feet again and purchased an old gallery and cottage in the tin mining town of Derby, Tasmania, where he continued to sell his paintings but with a Tasmanian slant on them.
After living on the Sunshine Coast for 15 years, Michael, again back to Broken Hill and lives there and paints fulltime, sometimes taking trips out bush to paint on the spot.
