Artwork Description

Mixed Media on paper

Signed on the front.

This painting is inspired by our interconnection with nature, and Robyn Kimmerer's book 'Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teaching of Plants '.

Kimmerer writes, “in some Native languages, the term for plants translates to ‘those who take care of us.’” She continues, “paying attention is a form of reciprocity with the living world, receiving the gifts with open eyes and open heart.”

This work is a reflection of the boundless gifts nature offers to us everyday.

This painting shows repeated gold line patterning on top of thicker, three white lines in a bracket like format pointing downwards to an olive green circle with white dots around and a white line in a shape of a circle on top of it. Underneath that are pink botanical, leaf motif shapes in a sketchy, drawn manner. These leaf motifs sit on top of a splatter of white dots. To the bottom right of the painting, there is a white cloud like shape with U shaped sgraffito motifs on it. Next to that is a thick pink round strip contouring around the cloud with bright pink little lines throughout it. On top of that is a green U shaped line with a line of white dots on top of it. This all sits on a background of purple, green, magenta and mustard abstract painterly shapes. This painting shows golden half circles drawn onto a purple and olive green background onto very top. There is a large white circle on the top left showing a sgraffito of an abstract, U shaped botanical motif. There are two large, thick, white lines coming out from the right hand side of the painting coming down to the the bottom, highlighted by a pink line and two pink dotted lines. There is a dark green, olive circle with a sgraffito line pattern inside it. This is all sits upon a background of light green, dark green, magenta, pink, mustard yellow and purple abstract, painterly shapes. This painting shows three pale pink 'U' like shapes in the top right hand corner with small, black crosses in the background, showing through it. There are three pink botanical motifs, leaf like drawings on the left, upper hand corner of the painting. There is a large white U shape with the sgraffito effect of abstract U shaped patterning inscribed through it. On the right, lower hand corner there is a large, flat olive green area with pink dots highlighting its side. There are five transparent golden yellow lines leading from the Pink U at the top right hand corner to the white 'U' at the bottom. This all sits on a background of painterly colours consisting of mustard yellow olive green, magenta and purple.Blue and mustard colour gingko leaves drawn in loose loose, sketch like manner on top of a background of washed out inky turquoise, pinks, greens. There is white line work at the bottom of the painting with purple half circle shapes on top of it. Dark olive green forms surround the purple hall circle shapes. A mustard geometric shape comes down from top of the left hand side of the painting and is made out of lots of triangles. There are also bright pink dots near a green olive circle on the left of the gingko leaves.
