Artwork Description

Paris polyphylla is an amazing flowering plant, native to China and India. It produces these spider-like flowers that throw out long, thread-like petals. It is not often seen in Australia, so when a friend gifted me one in flower I had to paint it!

Artist Bio

Miffy Gilbert
Miffy Gilbert is a qualified horticulturist (BAS Hort.) and a Fellow of the Society of Botanical Artists (UK). She is also a member of the Botanical Art Society of Australia and the American Society of Botanical Artists.

A passionate botanical artist for over 15 years, Miffy embraces the intersection of art and science, using watercolor and colored pencils to capture the intricate structures and natural designs found in plants. Her work reflects a deep appreciation for botanical accuracy while conveying the beauty and complexity of the natural world.

Beyond her artistic practice, Miffy has had a diverse career in horticulture, including roles as a magazine editor, freelance writer for leading industry publications, group greenlife buyer, and nursery manager for a network of independent retail nurseries. She has also worked as a heritage horticulture consultant, keynote speaker, and horticultural educator.

Miffy’s work has been exhibited in The Art of Botanical Illustration (TABI – FRBGM, 2024), Re-Framing Nature (Friends of RBG Melbourne, 2019), Artanica (Mt Macedon Horticultural Society, 2021 & 2023), and Revelations, a solo exhibition at Seasons Restaurant, Cloudehill Garden & Nursery (Dec 2021–Dec 2024).
