Artwork Description

Inspired by a memory of Hainan, China, where the tropical light feels almost solid even in winter. ✨

I wanted to capture that intense midday moment when shadows cut sharp. The fishing boat rests against the rhythm of the waves, stillness and movement holding each other in balance.

As a Melbourne-based painter, I’m endlessly fascinated by how light differs across coasts and continents. This one feels like a collision of tropical energy and quiet observation.

Artist Bio

Mingze SUN is a Melbourne-based artist whose practice elegantly bridges the disciplines of watercolour painting. A graduate with a Master of Music from the University of Melbourne (2023), he possesses a deep theoretical and intuitive understanding of musicality, which forms the core of his visual art.

His work explores the translation of musical rhythm, emotion, and atmosphere onto paper. Through a masterful focus on light, shadow, and fluid washes, he captures not just a scene, but its inherent tempo and mood. This unique interdisciplinary approach results in evocative pieces that resonate with a distinct lyrical quality.

Committed to his craft, SUN has studied under renowned Victorian artists including David Taylor and Nina Volk. He is an active member of the Watercolour Society of Victoria and the Peninsula Art Society, contributing to and engaging with the local arts community. Her practice is a continuous meditation on the harmonious interplay between auditory and visual expression.
