Wet City

In 2023, I returned from a trip to a country with a special place in my heart, renowned for its almost constant rainfall. While sometimes inconvenient, the persistent drizzle and downpours have always held a certain charm for me. The way the rain transforms the city, creating a glistening, reflective canvas, inspired me to embark on a new artistic endeavour. I wanted to capture the essence of a rainy city day. Still, rather than focusing on the dreary greyness often associated with such weather, I infused my artwork with a vibrant and unexpected colour palette.

I have always been fascinated by the way artificial lights interact with rain-soaked streets. They bounce and shimmer in the puddles, creating a mesmerizing dance of reflections. This interplay of light and water became a central theme in my artwork.

The painting is based on a photograph I took during my travels. However, I didn't want to replicate the image simply. Instead, I used it as a foundation, a springboard for my imagination. I added elements, altered perspectives, and played with colours to create a piece that reflected my vision. I delved into the complexities of depth, perception, and proportion in this particular work. I wanted to develop a sense of immersion, inviting the viewer to experience the scene firsthand.

The painting embodies a sense of abstraction, allowing me to explore the dynamic relationship between visual movement and energy. I used bold brushstrokes and contrasting colours to create a sense of vibrancy and excitement, even amidst the rain.
