Fogbound Launceston

This work gathers aerial fragments of Launceston — trees, houses, streetscapes, —and sets them amongst a suspended mysterious cloud of fog. The real and surreal weave together, shifting in and out of focus, like memory itself. It is a reimagining, born from topography and weather coming together for a moment at the break of day.

My practice is about exploring the mysteries of natural places, of hidden seclusion and renewal. There is a certain clarity being in the landscape, a desire to interpret and listen to the changes in nature, to feel the seasons, the time and temperature of the day, to watch the water flow knowing that this view will never resonate the same way again. Working with mixed media also shapes my interpretation and becomes an integral part of the work. I work mainly with oil paints that can be applied thickly or thinly building up layers towards a fuller varied surface then scrapping back and being reworked as I search for new possibilities within the work.
