Awakening Within

Part of the Atmospheric Light Series, Awakening Within is shaped by a concentrated vertical passage of light emerging through a deep atmospheric field. The central movement creates a strong focal point while surrounding horizontal and curved forms open the composition outward.

Layered surfaces build gradual variations in depth and luminosity, creating a sense of spatial distance rather than clearly defined forms. The interaction between the concentrated light and surrounding field allows the eye to move between the centre and wider areas of the composition.

The work reflects the Atmospheric Light Works through its emphasis on fluid transitions, depth, atmosphere, and the movement of light through open space.

Morvarid Dastjerdi is a Sydney-based contemporary abstract artist whose practice explores how painting can create a different quality of attention, opening space for personal perceptual engagement with relationships. She creates layered abstract works in which light, movement, rhythm, texture, colour, and space interact across the surface. Light plays a central role, shaping both the composition and the way visual relationships change with movement, viewpoint, and surrounding conditions.

Dastjerdi holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Film Directing, and her multidisciplinary background in cinema, theatre, and design informs her sensitivity to composition, movement, atmosphere, and visual attention. In selected works, she integrates circular mirrors into the painted surface as material and perceptual elements. Through reflection, these mirrors bring aspects of the viewer and surrounding environment into the visual field, creating a changing relationship between artwork, viewer, light, and space.
