I wanted to create a statement about the plight of wild orangutans. They face an uncertain future, quite possibly extinction within the next 50 years as a result of rapidly declining rainforest habitat being removed by big industries for palm oil, wood pulp, timber and much more. Protection measures are failing and the orangutans, along with pangolins, sun bears, tigers and elephants are all in critical danger of being lost forever.
The orangutan in this painting is reaching out to grasp onto anything to avoid being sucked into the vortex of nothingness.
