Photographic artist Nadia Culph, skilfully manipulates & controls light. Her still life images are inspired by nature's curiosities & wonders. Keeping her composition simple, Nadia creates stunning photographs that aim to bring the intricate details of nature to the fore. They are a reminder to stop & smell the roses, to slow down & appreciate the little things. Adopting low-key photography as her technique, Nadia creates drama & mood using natural light to accentuate our beautiful botanicals making them the hero of the piece. Described as 'Chiaroscuro' - the use of strong contrasts between light & dark, she cites Mapplethorpe & Penn as her influences.
βLiving in Melbourne's leafy suburbs, Nadia takes inspiration from her local surroundings with a strong focus on Australian native flora. Intrigued by unusual patterns, striking colour and bold contrasts, her clever use of diffused sunlight captures the unique design of her botanical subjects - everything from seasonal flowers & seed pods to tropical leaves & exotic feathers.
" In the age of highly sophisticated editing programs where photographs are heavily modified & transformed, I try not to alter the image keeping the editing process to a minimum to maintain as much realism as possible, to celebrate the natural design of my subjects, embracing their flaws & paying homage to their inherent beauty. The stark black or white background holds the viewer's eye on the subject without distraction & keeps the image simple & uncomplicated."
