Artwork Description

How does the bowerbird know to find and curate his artful collection of blue objects? It's one of the most magical things to stumble across in the Australian bush. He knows when to make the bower, arrange all his blue things, then when its just right he'll pop out and dance on his blue stage to attract a mate, in fact she's already watching, half hidden.

Over many months, Naomi builds up a collection a her blue finds from walks along the coastal bushland near her home, until she has enough to create a bowerbird artwork. The blue objects on the canvas were collected from July 2024 to June 2025. It takes roughly a year to collect the right amount. The birds also use natural objects such as berries, feathers and beetles, but they are very resourceful and even steal pegs of clotheslines for their bounty.

'I've been lucky enough to find several bowerbird displays in the bush near my home, and each one has made me gasp out loud. It's such a privilege to witness nature's raw beauty and ingenuity. I have played with the scale in this artwork, making the bounty of blue objects seem large compared to the bower bird. I imagine he believes the collection is more important than he is, because it means continuing his bloodline, and species.'

The work is also a statement about plastics and sustainability. These items will take years to break down, a reminder to think twice about our purchasing habits and our rubbish disposal and recycling.
