Artwork Description

In the 1980s, our family would hire a Sonata 7 trailer sailer with another family, and we'd head off to the Myall Lakes in the school holidays. Those carefree days were some of the best memories of my life. Everyone would get together for a race across to Johnson Island, or to Bungwahl, where we'd jump off and walk up to the old post office to mail letters back to our friends, and buy an ice cream.

In this painting, I've layered acrylic and enamel paint with fragments of vintage wallpaper onto canvas, to create a highly textured artwork. The result is an effervescent piece that invites collectors to cherish a sense of wild joy and find their own narrative within the scene. Expressive brushwork captures the shifting movement of water and sky, while the embossed patterned sails playfully tack to and fro. Balancing bold painterly gestures with delicate nostalgic pattern, the work reflects my ongoing exploration of memory, place and making the most of time while we have it.
