Artwork Description

Who doesn’t love Australia’s Big Things? I’ve transposed our Big Lollipop into a popular traditional Australian Colonial artwork by John Glover from 1835, titled 'View of artist's house and garden,’ using the Surrealist methodology of manipulation to highlight the questionable choices and absurdity in this genre of Australiana.
The painting shows Glover's flourishing replica English garden grown from plants and seeds brought with him from England by ship. Although Glover has delighted in presenting his (introduced) plants thriving, he has also depicted the natural bushland beyond the edges of the garden, showing the soft olive greens of gum trees.

Artist Bio

I grew up and studied Fine Art in beautiful Cape Town. I’ve lived in Paris and London before immigrating to Perth. I am a descendant of survivors of the Pogroms of Eastern Europe. Immigration, a sense of belonging, cultural heritage, colonialism and our impact on my environment are ideas that I explore in my work. I was inspired by ‘Feral Camel’ by Doreen Chapman at the Blacklight exhibition at AGWA to start a series of Ferals.
