Artwork Description

This photographic series, titled 'Florallegory', represents the interconnection between humankind and the natural world. It draws parallels between human beings and plant life on earth through such qualities as resilience, transience, beauty and wonder.

Drawing inspiration from floral still-lives and rites of adornment, these portraits use blooms and foliage as gentle allegories for the complexity of the human-flora relationship.

Each artwork was created using a mixture of photographic processes. A digital print of an analogue portrait was made, and then photographed again, overlaid with various blooms and foliage.

Artist Bio

Natalie Finney is a photographic artist based in Melbourne whose work explores the quiet intersections of nature, memory, and transformation. Her images often draw on symbolic or poetic elements—flowers in decay, children immersed in water, dreamlike figures at the edge of adolescence—offering a visual language that is both intimate and layered with meaning.

Working across digital and film formats, Natalie creates carefully composed photographs that evoke stillness, vulnerability, and emotional resonance. Themes of childhood, seasonal shifts, and the natural world recur throughout her practice, inviting viewers to pause and reflect on the fleeting and formative moments of life.

Her work has been recognised nationally, winning the Bluethumb Art Prize 2023 in the Photography category, and earning finalist positions in both the Olive Cotton Award (2021) and the National Photographic Portrait Prize (2020). She was also named #3 in Capture Magazine’s Emerging Portrait Photographers of 2020.

Natalie’s fine art prints are collected for their sensitivity, visual storytelling, and their ability to capture beauty in both stillness and change.
