Artwork Description

I wanted to capture the Blue-winged Shoveler in full flight, showing off the amazing sky-blue wing patches and that unique shovel-shaped bill that gives them their name. These ducks are such a great part of Australia’s wetlands, and I really enjoyed focusing on the details of their movement.
This piece was recently awarded an Honourable Mention in the 2026 Australian Duck Stamp Competition.
The judges noted:
“The depiction of the Blue-winged Shoveler in flight was particularly noted for its precision and realism, as well as the deliberate compositional choice to isolate the subject and allow its defining features to take centre stage. The judges appreciated how effectively this approach highlighted the species’ distinctive characteristics.”
