Artwork Description

This oil painting on stretched canvas by Neil Hartles is titled Rutledge Lane its inspiration came from a trip to Hosier Lane. Rutledge Lane is a horseshoe-shaped laneway that connects to Hosier Lane. It became a scene of controversy in 2013 when Melbourne street artist Adrian Doyle got permission to paint the entire laneway Nursery Blue. Melbourne graffiti artists weren’t too happy with this happening to the Laneway. Within hours of it taking place, they started to tag and graffiti the walls again. It looks as if they were determined not to leave one square inch of that Nursery Blue colour.

Hartles has created a painting of dynamic colours from the old cobblestone road to the Nursery Blue bins full of empty spray cans and graffiti all over the walls of this iconic Melbourne laneway. He has even placed his name somewhere for the viewer to find.

Artist Bio

Neil Hartles completed an Advanced Diploma in Visual Arts at distinction level at Albury’s Riverina Institute of TAFE NSW.
Since then, he has worked full-time as an artist. He has a passion for painting, oil and acrylic on canvas being his preferred medium. Consumed by the painting process and the study of the subject, it can distort time when he is in the studio, doesn’t even notice how long he has worked somedays. That’s what makes it his true calling in life.
Neil is also highly skilled in metalwork and furniture building and had four pieces in the MAMA collection. As a fourth-generation metalworker, blacksmithing is in his blood. He has been blacksmithing for over 25 years as part of his art practice and found it comes naturally to him. He loves creating things that bring happiness to the people that buy his artwork and support his creative ability.
He has sold numerous paintings and metal sculptures to private collections and art galleries.
