Nell is a self taught visual artist and photographer living on the South Coast of Western Australia.
Looking past the obvious, close observation & engagement with the subject is her process. The challenge is to see beyond the distraction of the conspicuous to capture its unique self.
With the exploration of colour, form and light, Nell finds her inspiration everywhere, in particular her love & passion for her own garden, along with her growing collection of unique and colourful vintage/antique glassware and vessels.
Flora is a reoccurring theme for Nell. She creates a bouquet of flora, then rearranges them focusing on their extraordinary beauty, shape, contrast and composition. Rearranging and enhancing these elements allows her to satisfy the search for beauty and order.
Movement & adjustsments with the camera Nell can achieve the spontaneity of composition & colour. Technique & tools with each project or series often change, but the images perspective, drama & passion remain the same.
Nell also uses colour paper in her photography & takes great delight with the interlayering of these colours & shapes within the camera. Just as a painter would blend colours with a paint palette.
The layers are built up in her camera, which makes Nells workflow instinctive & spontaneous where each decision is predicted on the result of the last one. It is a totally immersive process for Nell where the possibilities are endless with minimal post production used.
Nells work can be recognised by a timeless & ethereal quality where the imperfections of the subject, camera, or technique are often highlighted as an integral part of the final image
Her artistic approach can be challenging and unpredictable but with exciting results.
