Natura Morta

To sit and be still to evoke a feeling of tranquillity and calmness - still life the genre has interested me for some time now and I have been drawn to making photographs of objects. In a picture these objects can play a dual role by not only standing as themselves but also as architectures and shapes. With inspiration from painters such as Giorgio Morandi, Juan Gris and William Bailey my intention is to achieve the same feelings with photography, without the use of digital post-production. Organising and rearranging these things I feel in charge, creating different worlds, relationships and a sense of order and space. Ceramic and glass are wonderfully reflective, and I love how they perform when the sitters are repeatedly arranged in various compositions. They tend to merge into each other highlighting the light, tonal subtlety and translucency of the objects. This effect is dramatised in the images that I make by combining several exposures of the same objects, physically rearranged in front of a background that I have painted.
