Nellie Zimmerman emigrated from the Ukraine to Australia as a young child. Her art portrays the themes of strength, perseverance and regeneration – characteristics she sees reflected both in the colourful and strong characters of her childhood experiences and in the rugged beauty of the Australian landscape.
The freedom she expresses in her art is a celebration of the opportunities and optimism unique to this young country. The tactile aspect of her work, which incorporates collage and multi-layered textured paintwork, has sparked much interest and has become her signature style.
