Artwork Description

This year I turned 50 in April. A milestone really and I’m humbly proud of it. I love my life very much and I’m grateful for everything, everyone and every experience in it. I decided to create this painting to celebrate and commemorate this milestone age - to record my identity, thoughts and feelings at the time - my visions, spirit and art/painting practice. My intentions and plan was to create an abstract non representational self portrait. At the start, I didn’t know where I was going with it. And it’s not what I thought it would be. But I continued with the process to see it through to completion. It is an abstract study created in a state of somewhat automatic freedom, fluidity and letting go (oblivion). Bold bright colours, shapes, marks and smears meld and coalesce on the canvas in an experimental guided representation of thoughts ideas visions and symbols. It is a third eye painting. I do love chartreuse.

Artist Bio

Hello and welcome to my Bluethumb profile page. My name is Ngeun Sysengthong and I am a Lao Australian artist. I work on both Gadigal Country and Yuin Country, on the east coast of Australia.

My art practice is focused on abstract oil painting. I also enjoy creating sculpture and mixed media works. My artworks are hand created, fuelled with love, care and emotion.

I enjoy experimenting and exploring the possibilities of oil paint and other mediums through expressive, abstract and semi abstract works including landscapes, portraits and still lifes. I am interested in and inspired by God, spirit, nature, people and the human condition.

I am mostly self taught as an artist and painter. I studied 3 unit visuals arts in high school in 1994. My sculpture titled Birth Death Rebirth was selected for the 1994 ARTEXPRESS exhibition. It was awarded the Gould League Environment Award and featured on the front cover of the ARTEXPRESS catalogue.

I was also enrolled in and studied for a Bachelor of Fine Arts (for one semester) and then transferred to a Master of Arts (Research) (also for one semester) at UNSW College of Fine Arts (COFA) in 2002, which I deferred without completion.

I am grateful and enjoyed my study and experience at COFA. Now, I am grateful and feel blessed to be able to continue to learn and practice my art in my own time and space with an incredible and varied supply of life teachers and mentors, and resources and supporters.

Thank you for visiting my profile and taking the time to view my artworks. To view more of my work and follow my art practice, you can do so on Instagram and Facebook. I am available for commissioned works.

Thanking you kindly, Ngeun.
