This painting depicts two male Australian giant cuttlefish sizing up against each other in competition for a female. Even though I gathered my own reference material, this painting in particular was composed with the help of photographs by Carl Charter. And thanks to Janine Baker for explaining the behaviour of the scene to me. It was amazing to experience the cuttlefish first-hand while snorkelling with EMS at Point Lowly in the Upper Spencer Gulf. The beauty of the underwater world where they meet in such large volumes is just breathtaking.
