Irises in Detail

This is a study of a section of van Gogh’s famous painting post-Impressionist painting ‘Irises’. In examining his painting, I decided to produce this version as several layers. A thick application of paint on stretched canvas, called impasto, with an emphasis of short brush strokes in both the Irises and the background. A dramatic, lyrically rhythmic, imaginative, and emotional application of paint is used in this composition.

I was born in Adelaide, South Australia, worked as an art teacher and artist in Victoria and South Australia after completing my B.A. in Secondary Art Teaching in 1982 and B.A. in Design in at the University of South Australia in 1988. I am inspired by my travels overseas to Paris, France and The Netherlands as well as my local coastal community. I enjoy painting in oil paints to create a textural effect with paint brushes and also use acrylic paint.
