The third in a series inspired by the photographer Bill Brandt. This dedication is from the photo titled Children in Sheffield, taken in 1937 by Brandt. It is also inspired by the Scottish artist Joan Eardley. Joan has been described as a 'thinking painter' as well as a 'feeling painter'. I think you can see this in her works, especially those that are layered and textured - those of her street children, for example, which I love. Joan was also a great reader, an analytical thinker, a quiet, self contained person. And finally, it is dedicated to the city of London, which I hope to visit one day. Viewed up close, you can see in this painting the Yeoman Quartermaster at the Tower of London holding a raven; Big Ben Clock Tower; children on the Peter Pan statue in Kensington Gardens; Trafalgar Square with the Lord Nelson statue and Piccadilly Circus. These pictures have been taken from the book In and Around London, 1973.
