Artwork Description

This piece is inspired by the inquisitive nature of the iconic New Zealand Tui. Known for their bold personalities and melodic calls, these striking birds are a familiar sight flitting among the flax flowers each spring.

Artist Bio

Nicola Reif is an award-winning, Master Pastel Artist renowned for capturing the soul of her subjects through vibrant, detailed layers of colour. Originally trained as a geologist in Western Australia, Nicola’s fascination with earth processes and the natural world laid the foundation for her artistic journey. After nearly two decades in New Zealand, surrounded by wild landscapes and abundant wildlife, she honed her craft and developed a deep appreciation for the beauty and fragility of nature.

Now based back in the Goldfields, Nicola brings together her scientific background and artistic passion, creating works that celebrate the character and spirit of wildlife—from beloved pets to rare native species. Her practice is rooted in personal observation, often photographing her own subjects to ensure each piece radiates authenticity and life.

Nicola holds Master status with both the Pastel Society of New Zealand and the International Association of Pastel Artists, and is a member of the Pastel Society of Australia, the Pastel Society of Western Australia, the Pastel Society of America, and the Society of Animal Artists. Her work has been exhibited widely and is held in private collections around the world. As a sought-after tutor, Nicola shares her expertise through workshops and private lessons, inspiring others to discover the expressive power of pastel. Whether creating a commissioned portrait, a wildlife study, or teaching the next generation of artists, Nicola’s goal is always to inspire a deeper appreciation for animals, nature, and the delicate beauty of our shared world.
