Human Nature Reinterpreted

Human nature is my interpretation of the human neurological system and its parallels to natural formations. The work takes inspiration from three parts of the brain associated with sleep, memory and emotion: the amygdala, thalamus and hippocampus.
Through my arts practice of ceramics I wanted to highlight the form and textural similarities of the brain to living components found in the natural world, specifically coral. In Greek mythology coral was formed from the blood of Medusa and as such coral has been symbolic of immortality, metamorphosis and from turning something ugly into a natural beauty. Human Nature explores this concept from exploring two subjects of living and organic matter and highlighting how the brain associated with rationale and logic also has the ability to be a living beautiful entity through its ability to conjure dreams and emotions.

In this version of Human Nature a coral branch has replaced a previous iteration to represent the synapses of cognition.

Stefanie is a Scottish painter and sculptor based in Australia.

Stefanie studied a (BAHons) in Sculpture Fine Art (1st Class Honours) at Edinburgh College of Art. She was awarded the Andrew Grant award for Creative Excellence for her degree show.

She has exhibited across Australia in exhibitions, art prizes, and festivals as well as in the U.S.A and the U.K.

In the U.K exhibition highlights include having her work on display at National Portrait Gallery and Edinburgh Castle. In the U.S.A her work has been exhibited at Climate Gallery New York, Arch Enemy Galleries, Philadelphia and Grand Rapids Arts Festival, Michigan.

In 2025, Stefanie is embarking on 100 artworks themed to equines and horses.

Her work focusses on fine detail at a small scale.

Her work is often influenced by her interests in neurology, mythology, The Golden Age of Illustration and literature.
