Artwork Description

Taifa is an exploration of architecture, light and human presence, inspired by the Moorish architecture of southern Spain.

The painting centres on a monumental arched doorway, its intricate geometric decoration standing in striking contrast to the simplicity of the surrounding walls. Deep shadow fills the arch, while the warm ochre and pale stone catch the strong Mediterranean light. The architecture has an almost monumental stillness, reduced to its essential forms and patterns.

A solitary figure stands beside the doorway, dressed in white and carrying a walking stick. He occupies only a small part of the composition, yet his presence changes the character of the entire scene. He provides a human scale to the architecture while introducing an element of uncertainty. We don't know who he is, where he has come from or where he is going. He is simply there, momentarily sharing the space with the architecture.

The title Taifa refers to the independent Muslim kingdoms that emerged in al-Andalus following the fragmentation of the Caliphate of Córdoba. For me, the word carries a sense of place and history without attempting to describe a particular moment or event. The painting is not intended as a historical reconstruction. Instead, the title is another layer of the encounter — a reminder that places can contain traces of histories far beyond what is immediately visible.

As with much of my recent work, I am interested in how little a painting sometimes needs. The architectural detail is carefully observed, but much of the surrounding space is deliberately quiet. Light defines the surfaces, shadow gives the arch its depth, and the figure provides just enough human presence to make the otherwise empty space feel inhabited.

Taifa is ultimately less about a particular building or person than about the experience of encountering a place where architecture, light and memory seem to exist together. It is a moment in which the present feels briefly connected to something much older.

Artist Bio

I loved to draw and paint from a very early age. I was fascinated by the capability of artists to bring to life the world around them; to represent form, light and shade; to create three dimensions within two.

Simultaneously I was drawn to photography. From my earliest self-processed black and white prints to the sophistication of modern digital manipulation, I have always taken pictures.

In my professional life I established and ran successful creative businesses in London, Luxembourg, Malaga, Berlin and Sydney. I held senior roles in prominent design practices and advertising agencies, including the creative directorship of Europe's first online service.

More recently I taught design at universities and design schools in Sydney, Australia and Southern Spain with particular focus upon sustainable design thinking, human-centred design and developing successful design practice.

I began my career as a junior illustrator in London. It's therefore appropriate that with more time on my hands these days I should return to my first love.
