About

I was born in Russia, lived almost half of my life out of Russia, in the UK, Philippines, Oman and now Brisbane. I feel absolutely blessed having had the opportunity to experience this variety of cultures and I feel like my paintings reflect my background a lot. However, not only have I travelled and experienced many cultures, my art has, too, as my work is in the collections of the Australian Catholic University and Archdiocese of Brisbane, as well as in private collections around the world including the US, Norway, Japan, Australia, China, Holland, Oman and Russia.

I agree with Maurice Vlaminck who said, “To be a painter is not a business, any more than to be an anarchist, lover, racer, dreamer or prize fighter.” Art is a journey for me, and one that I love. Style is a commitment and a cage. I like my freedom and the ability to change, according to the mood, surrounding, the weather and a sudden impulse or impression. I don’t understand how some people can paint the same painting 100 times, just changing slightly the composition or a bit of colour here and there. They must be very bored, indeed. I like to surprise myself, breaking rules and laws, exploring the new territories. I think the only crime the painter can commit is being dull. I paint landscapes and still life, though my real passion is portraiture. I believe that we are here not to copy reality, but to express it. And to paint a portrait is to go beyond the people’s appearance to capture their deeper truth. “Are we to paint what’s on the face, what’s inside the face or what’s behind it?” – Pablo Picasso

Influences

My other passion is History of Art, especially Modern Art, the period from the end of 19th till the middle 0f 20th century – the School of Paris, Fauves, Russian Avantgarde, Expressionists and some individual artists who did not belong to any school. Not only for what they painted but also for who they were. But you could not really separate these artists from their work - the artists were creating their work, but their work was shaping the artists in return.

Paris is my favourite city and Musee Orsay is my Mecca.
