Artwork Description

This piece invites the viewer into a multi-level haven where every corner offers a new tool for the imagination. The composition is grounded by a classic teal-and-white checkered floor, which draws the eye toward a central spiral staircase - a symbol of upward movement and creative elevation.

To the left, shelves groan under the weight of glass bottles filled with liquid pigments in every imaginable shade, transitioning from deep indigo to warm ochre. To the right, the precision of an art shop is on full display with neatly organised brushes and paint tubes. The back wall serves as a colourful textile or paper library, stacked with bolts of fabric that mimic the look of a well-loved bookshelf.

The upper mezzanine, featuring a plush pink armchair tucked beneath a grand arched window, suggests that this isn't just a place to buy supplies, but a place to dream. The view through the glass looks out onto a serene canopy of trees, bathing the entire room in soft, natural light. Whether it’s the stacks of canvases waiting for a first stroke or the quiet reading nook above, the piece feels like a warm embrace for the creative soul.

Artist Bio

Olivia Kate Walmsley is a Melbourne-based visual artist and registered Art Therapist (MA, La Trobe University) whose work explores the intersection of memory, texture, and the human psyche. Drawing on her background in Communication Design and landscape studies at Edinburgh University, Olivia creates tactile, visceral pieces that act as "anchors" for nostalgia.

Her practice is deeply influenced by the belief that certain patterns and colours have the power to transport us to a specific time or place. Rather than focusing on intellectualised subjects, Olivia prioritises the 'felt' experience, using rich textures and layering to evoke a sense of home and history. Every piece is an invitation to pause, reflect, and reconnect with the quiet stories we carry within us.
