More steampunk work from my sketch book of steampunk drawings and sketches. I've always been influenced and inspired by the woodcuts of MC Escher, the way windows within windows, within windows keep taking onward and further into a two dimensional image, to allow the viewer myriads of planes and dimensions to travel along.
I have used as with these surreal works various materials that add texture, depth and colour to the surface. I begin with an ink sketch directly onto the canvas and then build layers of the monotone ink in black sepia and neutral tones with heavy washes. Next comes the layers of goldleaf and Japanese origami paper. The final material is the oil, which is the predominant colour material on the surface. This was a commission from an earlier sketch.
