Artwork Description

This homage to the sun aims to capture the significance of its power and dazzling brightness to life on Earth - a natural phenomenon that shapes our very existence, and which has been worshipped in one way or another throughout the ages. The use of 24K gold leaf is not only symbolic, inasmuch as one of humankind's most precious metals is, historically, an apt representation of one of our most precious life-forces, but it also serves to capture and reflect light in the painting, adding to the vibrancy of the image and introducing ever-shifting shimmers of brightness. Similarly, the addition of the other two complimentary colours to the various shades of yellow - the lines of red and blue - sharpen the contrast significantly and also make the gold leaf 'pop' in an even more striking manner than it otherwise would. To me, the geometrical overlays suggest that the sun is possibly being viewed through a man-made infrastructure, such as the corner of a window, a beam, or a portion of lattice, perhaps ... but that's where the viewer's imagination takes over.

Artist Bio

I am an artist and author who loves looking for the stories in life and in the world around me, and have spent most of my life telling stories through words and with paint. My novels, short fiction and non-fiction have been published in the United Kingdom and Australia. Several years ago, I decided to dedicate more time to art, and it's a decision I'm delighted I made because I find painting wonderfully absorbing and rewarding. Making a canvas or board spring to life with light and colour, shadows and highlights, is an amazing feeling, and having other people enjoy that work is even better!

Emigrating to Australia over 35 years ago, my first impressions were of the scale of the landscape and sky, the depth of the horizon, the brightness of the light, the vividness of colours and sharpness of contrast, but familiarity has in no way dulled this for me. On the contrary, painting helps me continue to learn to see these qualities in every day life; aspects of which I in turn try to capture in my work.
