Hi there! thank you for taking the time to check out my Bluethumb Art page. I really do appreciate it.
Like most artists, I started at a very young age constantly drawing, often copying the daily newspaper cartoons and sporting figures, LP record covers and pretty much any image I could see around me. I won my very first art competition held by the Hobart Museum when I was around 13 or 14 and my prize was a book about Rembrandt. Needless to say, he has inspired me to focus mainly on the human figure with a keen interest in Portraiture. However, I first and foremost paint for myself, meaning I will draw and paint any subject that grabs my attention or offers a challenge. I think that this approach towards my paintings and charcoal drawings means that I only paint what I love, and I hope that this shines through in my finished pieces.
Anyway, here's the blurb!
Paul Cox, an Australian painter born in 1968, weaves his artistic journey through the serene landscapes of the Macedon Ranges. After an extensive period of exploration and work across Asia and the Middle East, Cox returned to painting with renewed vigor. His unwavering commitment lies in capturing the intricacies of human emotion and memory, employing a dynamic figurative style and textured compositions that resonate deeply with viewers.
One of Cox’s techniques is a harmonious blend of oil paint and egg-oil tempera, creating a tactile surface that beckons viewers into a sensory exploration of his artistry. Bold brushstrokes and layered depth serve as conduits for thematic explorations, bridging past experiences with contemporary narratives.
In recent years, Cox embarked on a series of projects delving into memory and identity. Reimagining old family photographs with expressive brushwork, he transforms personal mementos into large-scale, immersive canvases. These evocative pieces not only celebrate nostalgia but also invite viewers to reflect on their own connections to memory and heritage.
The artist’s commitment to series allows him to delve deeply into each subject before venturing into new creative territories. His accolades include the Aub Gibson Best Original Painting award and multiple first prizes in various painting categories.
Recent exhibitions at esteemed venues such as B-Mac Gallery and the Kyneton Agricultural Society Inc. showcase Cox’s ability to captivate audiences with emotive storytelling and masterful technique. Through his art, he invites viewers on a journey of introspection and discovery, encouraging them to explore the profound connections between the past, present, and future.
