I chose this angle of the bridge to show the towering size and strength of the Pylons that support the Sydney Harbour Bridge. After doing some research I found that the top parts of the Pylons are just for show.
The presence of the Sydney Opera House 'peeking' through represents the ongoing competition between the bridge and the opera house. Which Icon is more popular?
Abutments at the base of the pylons are essential to support the loads from the arch and hold the span of the bridge firmly in place, but the pylons themselves have no structural purpose. They were included to provide a frame for the arch panels and to give better visual balance to the bridge.
The pylons were not part of the original design, and were only added to calm the public who were concerned about the structural integrity of the bridge.
