Paul is a self-taught artist represented in the Queensland Art Gallery and private collections. He is closely involved in the outdoor subject every day through photography. His subjects are based on actual landscapes, but although he adheres to the detailed construction of the particular scene, his goal is not to preserve the figurative appearance (which he considers incorrect as reality is always changing) but rather to communicate the actual experience, by reducing the subject to its elemental constituents. The subjects are carefully chosen.
In paint he works on the the ability to get the same directional marks with the brush as with drawing media, in order to capture this gesture of the subject. Brush quality and the consistency of the paint are important, and he uses natural hair brushes with fluid paint. He is currently working in Cambodia on a painting on a theme of the rhythm of trees.
