Artwork Description

I recently combined my passion of the Houtman Abrolhos Islands, off the Western Australian Coast, with my fascination of the Batavia shipwreck. This particular piece 'Abandoned on Morning Reef' captures the evening after the ship ran aground when the ship was still fairly intact but beyond re floating. At this time, the wind began to blow hard from the North West as it can in these parts during winter season. This work depicts the final piece of the trilogy series titled 'Batavia Aground'. This series is the timeline of that historical and tragic day when the ship went aground at the Abrolhos Islands.

Artist Bio

Paul Lucas was born in Derbyshire, England in 1955 and moved to Western Australia with his family in 1963.Inspired by the vivid Australian landscape and artists of the Romantic Movement, such as Turner and Constable, Paul devoted himself to nurturing and realising his talent for rich and dramatic depictions of local landmarks. His unique vision and subtle interpretations have won many admirers. Paul is also renowned for his muse of the ocean, particularly the areas surrounding the Abrolhos Islands off the Western Australian coast, a ‘subject’ he became fascinated with after working for many years on Cray boats. His love of and respect for the ocean is evident in his work and his latest canvases capture in spectacular detail and colour the ephemeral moods and subtleties of the water and horizon, combining superb detail with an extraordinary use of colour and light. Paul Lucas has a gift for truthfully observing environments whilst elevating mundane details; in his vision the utilitarian becomes sublime.More recently, Paul is excited to showcase his new creation on his journey as an artist. He is currently exploring an aerial perspective of the West Australian Coastline, in particular Perth iconic beaches.Paul is passionate about capturing the complex patterns that water creates.Paul Lucas has exhibited in South Africa, Rhodesia, Canberra, Alice Springs and throughout WA. He now resides in Perth, WA with his wife and family.
