My love of the river started after serving as first mate on the River Murray Queen. Seeing the devastation wrought by climate change is heartbreaking…. Misuse and human intervention in the natural balance of the environment, and in particular the Murray Darling Basin, continues … we seem to be incapable of following the overwhelming science that says we have to change or we will lose this magnificent river system.
I wanted to portray a traditional Australian landscape with a warning of what will happen to our precious water resource if we don’t take climate change seriously. The gum trees will hang on to life after the water has gone, but even they will eventually succumb.
The painting is an amalgamation of many memories of my time on the river and in the Flinders Ranges.
