Richard has played music for most of his long life and when he commissioned me to paint an oil portrait, I was invited to one of his regular sessions to sketch and take reference photos. I knew instantly that I had the reference material for a further painting, which I chose to do in watercolour.... The crafted instrument, the harmonious tones, the rhythmic movements of the fingers and bow, the depth and complexity of the score, the peaceful aura... the beauty of Richard enjoying 'his passion'
