I did a Residency for Melbourne Fashion Week at the Emporium and this laneway was straight outside, so I walked past it every day. I was struck by the grunginess, the bright yellow bins, graffiti and the busy vibe. This work was painted quickly using mainly a palette knife in order to capture the energy. A typical Melbourne laneway scene.

Paula Maggs is an expressionist artist living and working in Melbourne. Her intuitive painting style conveys intense emotional states through colour and gestural mark making.
Maggs seeks to utilize the materiality of the paint to express psychological states. Her underlying concern is to dig beneath the facade of what it means to be human.
She completed a Master of Fine Art (with distinction) at RMIT in 2023.
Maggs has exhibited in both group and solo shows around Melbourne, as well as participating in a residency for Melbourne Fashion Week in 2021.
Previous study includes a Bachelor of Design Arts (with distinction) in 2021 from LCI Melbourne.
