Artwork Description

When I lived in Torquay many years ago, I was fascinated by the windswept trees on the headland. They had grown with a permanent lean. This image has sat dormant in the back of my mind until, during the process of creating this work, the idea suggested itself.
I feel like life is a bit like that. It batters you relentlessly, so that if you don't bend a little you will break.

Artist Bio

Paula Maggs is an expressionist artist living and working in Melbourne. Her intuitive painting style conveys intense emotional states through colour and gestural mark making.
Maggs seeks to utilize the materiality of the paint to express psychological states. Her underlying concern is to dig beneath the facade of what it means to be human.
She completed a Master of Fine Art (with distinction) at RMIT in 2023.
Maggs has exhibited in both group and solo shows around Melbourne, as well as participating in a residency for Melbourne Fashion Week in 2021.
Previous study includes a Bachelor of Design Arts (with distinction) in 2021 from LCI Melbourne.
