When I was a young boy I used to play with friends in the grounds of a local convent. In the bike sheds of the convent was a sign which read “any nuns caught smoking will go do bed without any supper” This has always struck me as funny. At a time in my life where I didn’t think adults ever did anything wrong, I was shocked to realise that nuns of all people were running around having sneaky cigarettes behind the bike sheds just like us kids.
Pete Conroy is an English artist based in Echuca. He focuses his attention on portraits and distortion of the human face and figure. Using traditional techniques mixed with a modern style he paints humans with impossibly stretched facial features and limbs. Where the shape and structure of his subjects are out of sync with reality he attempts to bring the characters back into the realistic realm with a mix of modern and traditional techniques of oil painting.
