Artwork Description

I try to project a sense of style, grace and confidence with my female figures. Combining simplicity of subject matter and vibrant colour I aim to present and convey the mood of the subject at a specific moment in time in which we can all relate. In this case that special moment of the day where one would relax and enjoy the flavours of a good red wine

Artist Bio

Peter Dare is a distinguished Australian cartoonist, artist, and painter best known as the creator
of the much loved "KOOLROO" kangaroo cartoon strip.

Peter's artistic journey is a testament to his boundless imagination and unwavering passion for storytelling.

For over two decades, from 1983 to 2004, Peter's iconic "KOOLROO" strip graced the pages
of major newspapers in Australia and abroad, including the Sydney Daily Telegraph, Sydney Sunday Telegraph,
Melbourne Herald, Brisbane Daily Sun, Brisbane Sunday Sun, Perth Sunday Times, Northern Territory News,
and numerous international publications.
With his keen eye for humour and knack for visual storytelling, Peter captivated audiences with his endearing
characters and witty narratives.

Transitioning from the world of cartooning to painting, Peter brings the same spirit of creativity
and whimsy to his canvas. His paintings reflect a rich tapestry of life, blending elements of
Australian culture, philosophy, wildlife and everyday experiences with a playful and colourful twist.
Drawing inspiration from his years of cartooning, Peter infuses each artwork with a unique perspective
and a touch of humour that is distinctly his own.

“In cartooning I spent years working on telling a story and pondering on how to get a message across
through visual image, and that’s what I love to do.”

In his "Retro female" series, Peter explores the intersection of style and attitude, channelling a subtle
Pop Art influence into vibrant compositions. Through his signature use of bold colours, contrasting lines,
and expressive characters, Peter creates pieces that command attention and evoke a sense of joy and
delight in the viewer.

“My goal is to give thought to and convey the presence of style, fashion, and elegance in my female figures.
I believe if I can effectively express a sense of contemplation and mood in my subject then I feel it can project
and enhance the experience for the viewer“

Beyond aesthetics, Peter's goal as an artist is simple yet profound: to bring a smile to people's faces and
uplift their spirits through his work.
Whether through his whimsical cartoons or his evocative paintings, Peter seeks to connect with his audience
on a deeper level, sparking moments of contemplation, inspiration, and joy.

“To be able to lift someone’s mood or brighten a space with your work is a special reward.”

Born in 1957 into an artistic family, Peter's early years were shaped by the serene beauty of
the Hawkesbury River in Berowra Waters, north of Sydney. Surrounded by nature's splendour, he discovered
his passion for art at a young age, spending countless hours sketching and drawing in the tranquil bushland.

After honing his craft through formal education and professional experience in the graphic arts field, Peter embarked
on a remarkable journey that would see him become one of Australia's most published cartoonists and an accomplished painter.

Today, his artworks continue to captivate and inspire, serving as a testament to his enduring creativity and imagination.
