Artwork Description

This work portrays the Supermarine S-5, a British high-speed seaplane designed and constructed specifically for entry into the Schneider Trophy Race, a prestigious international seaplane speed contest held in the 1920s & 1930s.
Only three examples of the S-5 were built. Two were entered into the 1927 Schneider Trophy contest and the pilots achieved 1st and 2nd place. Flight-Lieutenant Sidney Webster achieved the winning speed of 282 mph.
One of the S-5s crashed during an attempt at breaking the world air-speed record in March 1928, killing the pilot, Flight-Lieutenant Samuel Kinkead.
One of the two remaining S-5s was entered into the 1929 Schneider Trophy contest and it achieved 3rd place, behind an Italian entrant, the Macchi M.52 (in 2nd place) and the winner, the Supermarine S-6, an advanced version of the S-5.
