Artwork Description

The painting is in a Naive style, depicting Manly Cove from an elevated view. The Manly ferry Baragoola is shown as she berths alongside the Manly pier. The artwork is created from memory of the time when I worked as a ferry captain for the Port Jackson and Manly Steamship Company. The painting is an original that was completed in July 2025.

Artist Bio

I was born in 1946, and for most of my life, I followed a conventional path, unaware of the creative spark that lay dormant within me. It wasn’t until later in life that I made a spontaneous decision that would change everything: one day, I bought a canvas, some acrylic paints, and a set of brushes. This simple act ignited a passion I never knew I had, leading me to explore the world of art with fresh eyes and an open heart.
My artistic journey is deeply intertwined with the vibrant marine landscapes of Sydney Harbour, a place that has always held a special significance for me. My time as a captain for the Port Jackson and Manly Steam Ship Company in 1971 provided me with a unique perspective on the ferries that glide across these iconic waters. Each brushstroke reflects my memories of navigating these vessels, capturing the essence of their rhythmic dance against the backdrop of Sydney’s stunning skyline.
In my paintings, I strive to convey the dynamic interplay of water, vessel, and city life. The ferries, with their bustling energy, serve as a focal point, while the shimmering waves and the towering buildings create a vivid tapestry of movement and light. Beyond Sydney, my work also embraces the expressive vistas of the South Sea Islands, where I once captained smaller trading ships. These memories infuse my art with authenticity and a sense of adventure, inviting viewers to join me on a journey through the Pacific waters that have shaped my life.
My style is best described as Naive Art, characterised by its simplicity and vibrant colours. This approach enables me to convey the grandeur and essence of my maritime experiences without the limitations of traditional techniques. Naive Art often reflects a childlike perspective, capturing the world in a way that is both honest and imaginative. Through my paintings, I aim to offer a window into the beauty of my surroundings and the journeys that have defined me, inviting others to see the world through my eyes.
With each canvas, I continue to explore and celebrate the beauty of the sea, the joy of discovery, and the unexpected paths that life can take. My late-blooming passion for art has become a testament to the idea that it’s never too late to embrace creativity and share one’s story with the world.
