Studying in both fine art and design has enabled me to have a career straddling both worlds.I continue to work on commercial design projects, both large and small while also teaching traditional painting, drawing and printmaking to adults and teens to diploma level in an independent art school.
Working across a range of diverse and sometimes seemingly incompatible mediums, my art practice is largely focused on studio-based explorations of the figure — which often begin with a model and is slowly adapted through a repetitive process of addition, subtraction and reworking.
Like other contemporary representational approaches that have shifted away from abstraction to figuration, my work returns the focus to the figure as a visceral emotional subject.
Many of my works see individuals represented by a reduced palette and pitched against backgrounds that emphasise their affective gestural forms and expressive features. I place myself in the arena of contemporary representational art with acknowledgement of the influence on representation that the modernist movements have made.
I employ a variety of mediums from drawing and painting, through to printmaking with the resulting images incorporating a wide range of influences that can include news, film, books, history and pop culture.
