Artist Bio

Peter Taylor is an award-winning artist who resides in the picturesque northern beaches of Wollongong. He grew up along the vibrant northern beaches of Sydney, particularly around the iconic area of Manly.

I have always had a deep passion for art and design since I was young. During my teenage years, I filled countless sketchbooks with detailed drawings of beach and surf scenes, as well as playful cartoons that captured the spirit of my youth. As I matured, I found myself drawn to painting Australian landscapes in oils, taking inspiration from illustrious Australian masters like Tom Roberts and Sir Arthur Streeton.

After completing high school, I enrolled in the National Art School in East Sydney. It was there that I was encouraged to break free from the confines of realistic, restrained landscapes. The grand 20th-century masters had always been a source of admiration for me, and during my time at art school, I found myself increasingly captivated by the vibrant color palettes and dynamic compositions of iconic artists such as Picasso, Matisse, Van Gogh, and Monet.

However, as I navigated the challenges of adulthood, the need to make a living took precedence, and my artistic journey shifted away from fine art and original paintings into the realm of graphic design. The next decade saw me immersed in the world of magazine design, a period that was both rewarding and creatively fulfilling. Following that, I spent 15 years working for printing companies, where I applied my design sensibilities and color expertise. Despite the skills I honed, this phase left me yearning for the artistic inspiration that had initially ignited my creative spark.

In 2021, after years of longing, I made the pivotal decision to return to my first love: painting, impressionism, and design. The passion I once felt has been reignited, and I am thrilled to feel the creative juices flowing once again. My current work is an intriguing fusion of impressionist and modernist abstract styles, intertwined with the classic landscapes that defined my early artistic endeavors. There is an immense joy in once again being an artist, applying paint to canvas, and as I look ahead, I find the future brimming with excitement and possibilities. I was fortunate enough to win a People’s Choice Award at an art exhibition in 2025 and 2026, as well as a Highly Commended Award at the Thirroul Seaside and Arts Festival 2025—a testament to the return of my artistic journey.
