Artwork Description

A hooded figure stands slightly apart from the gathering, watching from the edge. While the group comes together, he remains on the outside — present, but separate. He is the quiet centre of the painting.
The hooded figure is the true subject of the painting. The surrounding figures and the arrival of new life sit behind him as a softer, secondary element. What matters most is his solitary presence — watching from within the group, yet no longer truly part of it.
The surface is built with very heavy impasto, reaching up to 30mm in places. This gives the work a strong sculptural quality, with the faces and forms emerging from thick, textured layers of paint. The muted palette of soft pinks, greys and off-whites keeps the mood atmospheric and contemplative.
It’s about presence that has faded from notice and memory.

Artist Bio

I’m Phillip Patterson, a Sydney-based painter who creates expressive, large-scale abstracts. My work is grounded in acrylics, resin and mixed media, and I’m passionate about exploring texture—manipulating materials to build surfaces that carry depth both visually and physically . Each piece evolves intuitively, allowing colour, movement and tactile elements to harmonise.
Inspired by coastlines, landscapes and shifting skies, I layer translucent washes and bold marks, then scrape back and build up thick impasto to reveal hidden forms. These textural processes create space and rhythm, inviting viewers to experience the interplay of light, colour and the palpable weight of the paint.

My paintings aim to evoke an emotional resonance and a sense of curiosity. By offering a fusion of colour, texture and depth, I encourage viewers to pause, reflect and connect with the subtleties of nature’s mood and their own memories .
