Artwork Description

“Emerald Magdalene” is a surreal, satirical portrait that reimagines the mythology of The Wizard of Oz through a contemporary, culturally layered lens.

Set within a reinterpreted Emerald City—a place traditionally depicted as a dazzling green metropolis at the centre of Oz —the work merges fantasy with real-world metaphor. The Emerald City becomes more than a fictional destination; it echoes Sydney itself, often referred to as the “Emerald City,” a place associated with ambition, illusion, and the pursuit of dreams .

At the centre stands a reimagined feminine figure—part sorceress, part icon—positioned between power and projection. The reference to “Magdalene” introduces undertones of myth, morality, and misinterpretation, contrasting purity with perception, and identity with the roles imposed upon it.

Rather than offering a literal narrative, the painting operates symbolically. The city becomes a stage set—glittering, seductive, and artificial—while the figure within it suggests both control and entrapment. Like the original Emerald City itself, often interpreted as a place of illusion rather than truth, the work questions what is real versus what is constructed .

Rendered in a bold contemporary pop art style, the composition uses saturated greens, high contrast, and graphic stylisation to heighten its sense of spectacle. The result is both visually striking and conceptually charged—where fantasy, religion, and modern cultural identity collide.

“Emerald Magdalene” offers collectors a layered and provocative work—one that transforms a familiar fantasy into a commentary on illusion, desire, and the environments that shape identity.
