Artwork Description

“Monkey Duchess” is a provocative satirical portrait that examines the construction of modern royalty through the lens of celebrity, media, and spectacle.

Centred on Meghan Markle—an American actress who became the Duchess of Sussex through her marriage to Prince Harry —the work explores the collision between traditional monarchy and contemporary fame culture. In this space, identity becomes highly visible, curated, and relentlessly scrutinised.

Rather than presenting a straightforward likeness, the portrait distorts and exaggerates familiar features, pushing the figure into caricature. This shift introduces discomfort and ambiguity, reflecting the intensity of public perception and the way individuals are reshaped through media narratives, praise, and criticism alike.

The title “Monkey Duchess” is intentionally confrontational, using shock and absurdity to highlight the tension between status and spectacle. It points to the way public figures can be simultaneously elevated and reduced—idolised, consumed, and dehumanised within the same cultural moment.

Rendered in a bold pop art style, the composition uses high-contrast colour, graphic simplification, and visual punch to heighten its impact. The aesthetic draws the viewer in, while the subject matter resists passive viewing.

Part of an ongoing exploration of celebrity, identity, and cultural projection, this work offers collectors a striking and unapologetically satirical piece—where power, image, and perception collide.
